Dr. Sujay Patel

Dr. Sujay Patel completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Queen’s University, a Medical Degree at University College Dublin and a Psychiatric Residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He received his FRCP (C) designation in Psychiatry in 2008. He is also a board certified Independent Medical Examiner by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME), as well as CMLE (Certified Medicolegal Expertise) and C-CAT (MB) certified by the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators (CSME).

 

He has trained in well-known psychiatric training facilities around the world such as the Maudsley Hospital (London, England), Mayo Clinic (Minnesota), the National Institute of Psychiatry (Mexico City), and Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University (Boston). 

 

He has had an inpatient and outpatient practice since 2008, which focuses on acute and chronic general psychiatry treating mood, anxiety, substance use and psychotic disorders. His interests and experience are varied and include areas such as Medical Leadership, Rehabilitation, Legal Medicine, Collaborative Care, Pain Medicine and Acquired Brain Injury. He is currently a consultant to the Kitchener-Waterloo Acquired Brain Injury Program.

 

He was a consultant for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and was appointed adjudicator for legal cases appearing before the Consent and Capacity Board (CCB) of Ontario. He is a practice assessor for the medical licensing body (the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario) as well as an Investigating Medical Coroner for the province of Ontario. He is also one of the bestdoctors.com specialists, as well as an assessor for Homewood Health Centre’s WSIB (Workplace Safety & Insurance Board) program. Additionally, he is a certified assessor with the United States of America Veteran Evaluation Services.

 

He is a Co-Founder of “Mental Health Without Borders,” a non-profit organization focused on global mental health. Through this involvement, he has led humanitarian aid missions to Guyana (South America) as an educator and advisor to the Ministry of Health.

 

He holds academic positions at the University of Ottawa, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and McMaster University, with published research and awards for clinical teaching. He is a previous Board Member of the Tri-Hospital Research Ethics Board (THREB). He is also an appointed Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

 

He has completed thousands of Independent Psychiatric Evaluations for various third parties such as insurers, employers, worker’s compensation boards and lawyers primarily in Ontario, but also in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. He has testified in various legal settings, and has been recognized by the court as an expert witness in his medical field of expertise.
